It was a very emotional moment: Kavita Krishnamurthy

New York: For Bollywood singer Kavita Krishnamurthy, performing at the famous Madison Square Garden amid loud cheers for Prime Minister Narendra Modi was one of the most emotional moment in her life.
"Modi is an iconic leader in whom I believe a lot. Today I am very proud to be an Indian. It was a very emotional moment for me," the noted singer, who performed with her violin maestro husband L Subramaniam and son, told PTI.
Krishnamurthy performed the 'Vaishnava Jan To', which is one of the most popular Hindu bhajans written in Gujarati language in the 15th century by poet Narsinh Mehta.
The bhajan was among Mahatma Gandhi's daily prayers.
Krishnamurty also performed the famous "I love my India" song evoking patriotic fervour among the 20,000-odd India-Americans present at the packed Madison Square Garden where Modi delivered an over an-hour-long speech.

Narendra Modi says India will lead 21st century world, assures lifetime Indian visa for PIO cardholders

New York: Addressing a rapturous crowd of NRIs here, Prime Minister Narendra Modiaffirmed on Sunday that India will move ahead at a rapid pace and lead the 21st century world.
At a unique event at the Madison Square Garden in the heart of Manhattan at which some 20,000 cheering NRIs were present, Modi said that his big win in the Lok Sabha elections had come with a big responsibility for him which he would fulfil.
Listing out India's advantages, the Prime Minister said that its three strengths were democracy, demographic dividend in which 65 per cent of its population was under 35 years, and the demand for India because it was a huge market.
Clearly with an eye on the younger generation, Modi said, "We will not do anything which will let you down."
"My government will be 100 per cent successful in fulfilling the aspirations of the people," he said, as the crowd repeatedly chanted 'Modi-Modi'.
Attired in a saffron Nehru jacket and yellow kurta, the prime minister held the packed indoor stadium spellbound, asserting that "Our attempt is to make development a peoples' movement."
In his over hour-long speech in Hindi which he began with 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai' while extending greetings for Navratri festival, Modi promised good governance saying after a gap of 30 years India has got a government at the Centre with a clear majority.
He also had a jibe at poll predictions in the run up to the Lok Sabha elections. "No political pundit or opinion makers could fathom such a verdict," he said.
Winning elections brought with it a big responsibility, he said. "Ever since I took up this task (as Prime Minister), I have not taken even a 15-minute vacation," he said.
The Prime Minister said there was no need for any disillusionment. "India is going to march ahead at a very fast pace."
"The 21st Century will be that of India. By 2020, only India will be in a position to provide work force to the world," he said, while citing examples of growing global demand for nurses and teacher."
He also said Americans nationals wanting to visit India for tourism purposes will get long-term visa.
"My effort is to make development a mass movement. I am confident is that we will succeed. There is cause for disappointment. This country is going to make rapid progress.
"There are many expectations from the new government. This government will be 100 percent successful in fulfilling the aspirations of people," he said amid loud cheers by the around 20,000 people.
"My dream is to see every Indian family has a home by 2022," he said.

Mangalyaan Close to Finishing Line - and a Date with History

Mangalyaan Close to Finishing Line - and a Date with History

Mangalyaan Close to Finishing Line - and a Date with History
Mangalyaan is set to enter the Mars orbit on September 24.
BANGALORE India's maiden mission to Mars, Mangalyaan, has performed to perfection and now is racing for its historic rendezvous with the Red Planet. And tomorrow by 7 am, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to be among the audience in Bangalore to cheer Mangalyaan on towards its destination.

Mangalyaan has had a dream run so far. But pushing it into the Mars orbit could be a tricky operation. The ISRO mission control will have to slow down the satellite and hope it gets drawn into the orbit by the gravity of Mars.

To slow it down, the satellites on board the rocket motor are fired for several minutes. The gravity of Mars then captures Mangalyaan. In case the satellite cannot be captured by Mars, it will be lost in outer space. (Read: Want a Selfie With Mangalyaan? Try This New Mobile App)

But Indian Space Research Organisation, or ISRO, is high on hopes of success, which has marked the progress of the project so far. (Read: India's Mars Orbiter, Mangalyaan Clears Crucial Test)

"We have to be relaxed if we have to take tough decisions and manage critical operations," said K Radhakrishnan, Chairman, ISRO, Banglaore.

Fast tracked by ISRO, Mangalyaan was made in just 15 months at a cost of Rs. 450 crore - the cheapest inter-planetary mission ever to be undertaken. (Read: Mangalyaan, the Cheapest Mars Mission Ever)

Hailing it on its launch on November 5, 2013, atop India's Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle, PM Modi had said, "The Hollywood movie Gravity cost more than our Mars mission - this is a great achievement".

The rocket that carried India's first unmanned satellite to Mars was as high as a 15-storey building and weighed nearly 320 tonnes - almost as much as 50 full-grown elephants.

The Mars Orbiter first made several revolutions around the Earth as it gathered enough velocity, and then it was shot onwards to Mars on its long journey. One after the other, four stages of the rocket had ignited, taking Mangalyaan higher into space.

Once in the Mars orbit, Mangalyaan will look for signs of life on the Red Planet, asking that big question: Are we alone in this universe

White Tiger Attacks And Kills Man Who Fell Into Its Enclosure at Delhi Zoo

White Tiger Attacks And Kills Man Who Fell Into Its Enclosure at Delhi Zoo

A white tiger attacked and killed a 20-year-old man who apparently fell into its enclosure at the Delhi zoo on Tuesday.

Witnesses say the man, Maqsood, fell 18 feet into a dry moat in the tiger enclosure at around 1 pm. Moments later, the fully-grown tiger could be seen dragging his body by the neck. An image taken by witnesses shows him cowering before the animal, his hands folded.

Some say he lost his balance while trying to get a closer look; the zoo authorities claim he jumped in despite warnings.

"He crossed the barrier of the enclosure and jumped in," said Zoo Director Amitabh Agnihotri. Other officials claimed a guard had warned Maqsood after he crossed over the outer fence and had even taken him out, but he went back in.

A witness said he raced to the tiger enclosure after hearing screams, to see the man locked in the tiger's jaws, writhing in pain.

"We saw that a white tiger had gripped a man by his neck. No one helped him," said Himanshu, a visitor.

The body remained at the spot for hours, until guards scared the tiger into a cage.

Maqsood, who stayed in west Delhi with his parents and brother, worked in a factory. "The last time I spoke to him, he said he is going to work," said his mother Ishrat, in shock.

Witnesses say Maqsood suffered for an agonizing 10-15 minutes before dying. Security guards could do nothing; witnesses claim they didn't have tranquilizer guns or wireless sets to call in reinforcements. The zoo authorities deny it.

"The tiger didn't attack at first until stones were thrown at it," said Bittu, who filmed the incident on his phone.

Zoo employees call the tiger Vijay. Born in 2007 in the zoo, the animal weighs 200 kg and has never attacked anyone before. It is one of the six white tigers in the zoo, and shares its enclosure with two others who were not seen today.

White tigers are found in southern and eastern Asia, particularly India, and owe their appearance to a recessive gene. They are regarded as an endangered species.

‘Bigg Boss 8’: Will the house turn into lovers’ paradise again?

‘Bigg Boss 8’: Will the house turn into lovers’ paradise again?

Mumbai: The cupid was at his best in the seventh season of ‘Bigg Boss’. Two love stories came to the fore- one of that of Armaan Kohli and Tanishaa’s and the other of Kushal and Gauahar’s. And this gave viewers yet another reason to follow the show religiously (read: for all obvious reasons!).
This year may be no different. With Aarya Babbar clearly hoping to find love inside the house, it is apparent that cupid may find itself at work yet again.
Aarya said that his mother is eagerly waiting for her daughter-in-law, and the ‘Bigg Boss’ house may help him find his bride!
Upen Patel too seems earnest enough to find a soul mate. The dashing young man, who struggles while speaking in Hindi, too may be in the mood to romance.
In a teaser from the second episode, one can find Upen trying to strike a romantic chord with co-inmate Sukirti Kandpal, who is very much single.
Will the viewers see love blossom inside the ‘Bigg Boss’ house once again?
Let’s wait and watch.

Maharashtra polls: BJP offers 130 seats to Shiv Sena, trouble over alliance continues

Maharashtra polls: BJP offers 130 seats to Shiv Sena, trouble over alliance continues

n a bid to salvage its 25-year-old alliance with Shiv Sena, the BJP on Monday evening sent a fresh proposal to the latter, offering it to contest on 130 seats in the forthcoming assembly polls in Maharashtra.
The development was confirmed by BJP's in-charge of Maharashtra, Rajiv Pratap Rudy, who was quoted as saying to the media that his party has now offered 130 seats to Shiv Sena with respect to the upcoming assembly polls in the state.
“We have now offered 130 seats to the Shiv Sena. It is a very liberal proposal and we hope that Shiv Sena will agree to it,” Rudy was quoted as saying to reporters.
This came hours after Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray put a new offer on the table and offered 126 seats to the BJP.
According to a news agency, Thackeray called up two senior leaders of BJP and told them that Shiv Sena is now ready to give 126 seats, but the BJP wants 130. However, nothing has been finalised as yet.
Shiv Sena had on Sunday offered to cede the BJP only 119 out of the total 288 seats in Maharashtra Assembly. BJP has climbed down to 130 seats from its earlier demand for 135.
Earlier in the day, reports had claimed that Bharatiya Janata Party president Amit Shah telephoned Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray and urged him that the alliance must continue. However, Shiv Sena later denied receiving any call from the BJP.
Insisting that the BJP-Shiv Sena alliance must continue, Shah had reportedly urged Thackeray to rethink on Shiv Sena's "impractical" proposal to BJP in which Shiv Sena refused to yield beyond 119 seats to the coalition partner.
State BJP poll in-charge Om Mathur, meanwhile, arrived in Mumbai this morning to hold talks with the Shiv Sena chief in this regard. Rudy also expressed hope that both parties would continue to move ahead on the same path and a positive outcome will be reached shortly.
Rudy said that the BJP discussed the ongoing situation in Maharashtra in depth during yesterday's Central Election Committee meeting that was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and several other top leaders. "During the meeting, Maharashtra was discussed in detail. The general consensus was that we want an understanding, we want the alliance to continue and it's a 25-year-old strong alliance," Rudy told a news agency.
"We have made an appeal to the Shiv Sena for a mutual understanding. We are very hopeful that a positive outcome will be there shortly," he added. The last date for filing nominations is September 27.
Both in Delhi and in Mumbai, BJP and Sena shortlisted candidates for next month's polls but refrained from announcing the list, awaiting the outcome of last ditch efforts to avoid split in the alliance.
"It was decided that efforts should be made to ensure that there is a respectable and mature understanding on seat-sharing and the alliance is kept intact. BJP wants to go to the polls along with Sena and other alliance partners," BJP in-charge for Maharashtra Rajiv Pratap Rudy on Sunday told reporters after the marathon meeting of the party's Central Election Committee (CEC).
The CEC is understood to have shortlisted 120 candidates out of a list of over 180 candidates that were discussed. This was followed by an informal meeting of the BJP Parliamentary Board to discuss the strategy in the wake of Thackeray pegging seats for BJP at 119.
Both the meetings, which went on for over three hours, were attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP president Amit Shah, who spent some time together separately, and other leaders.
Shah is believed to have spoken to Thackeray in the midst of the BJP meets, but there was no official word on it. Some BJP leaders made it clear that the party was ready to fight the polls on its own if Sena is unrelenting.
Hours after Thackeray's tough talk on seat-sharing, BJP told its old alliance partner that it was the duty of both the parties to continue the tie-up and sort out issues instead of going through the media, in remarks directed at the Sena chief.
Squabbling over seat-sharing showed no signs of resolution during the day with both the alliance partners waiting to see who will blink first. BJP said there was "nothing new" in Sena's final offer and hoped seat-sharing issue can be mutually settled.
In Mumbai, Shiv Sena had on Sunday said this was "the final attempt" to break the logjam over seat-sharing. The Sena chief also reminded Modi that late Sena supremo Bal Thackeray had backed him in the aftermath of the 2002 Gujarat riots. "Today I am making a final attempt to ensure that the Mahayuti (grand alliance of opposition parties) stays intact. Sena had initially asked for 160 seats. But now we are ready to part with nine seats. Shiv Sena will fight on 151 seats, leaving 119 seats for BJP. The remaining 18 seats will be given to our allies," Thackeray said.
Suggesting a way out to end the standoff, BJP leaders of opposition in Maharashtra Assembly and Legislative Council Eknath Khadse and Vinod Tawde said the party wants Sena to re-negotiate on such seats that they never won in the last 25 years, so that they are not given to the NCP-Congress alliance on a platter in the upcoming polls.

FBI Widens Probe of Naked Celebrity Photos

FBI Widens Probe of Naked Celebrity Photos

The FBI vowed on Monday to widen a probe into the massive hacking of naked celebrity photos if necessary, after new reported leaks including nude shots of Kim Kardashian.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) launched an investigation earlier this month after a first batch of pictures, including of "Hunger Games" megastar Jennifer Lawrence, was published.

On Saturday US media reported that more nude celebrity photos, including reality star Kardashian and actress Vanessa Hudgens, had been circulating on social media.

The pictures, also including US soccer star Hope Solo, appeared briefly on 4chan and Reddit, before being removed, celebrity gossip site TMZ reported.

BuzzFeed said that personal videos and photos belonging to actresses Aubrey Plaza, Mary-Kate Olsen, Hayden Panettiere and Leelee Sobieski were posted, in addition to previously unseen pictures of Lawrence.

"The FBI's investigation into alleged computer intrusion/theft is continuing," FBI Los Angeles spokeswoman Laura Eimiller told AFP Monday.

"I'm unable to comment on specifics with regard to alleged victims, but any individual who believes they are a victim of these violations is encouraged to report it, if not already engaged with law enforcement," she added.

Hackers first released a trove of nude starlets' photos on September 1, after snatching them from Apple's iCloud in what the tech giant has called a "targeted attack."

The company has denied its cloud storage system was breached, suggesting that the celebrities had their accounts hacked by using easy-to-guess passwords, or by giving up their personal data to cyber criminals posing as Apple, a technique known as "phishing."

In addition to Lawrence, celebrities whose pictures were allegedly stolen and posted online in early September included model Kate Upton, singer Avril Lavigne and actress Gabrielle Union.

PM Modi to Reach US a Day Ahead to Avoid Night Curfew

PM Modi to Reach US a Day Ahead to             Avoid Night Curfew

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has advanced his departure for his six-day US visit by a day to duck the night landing curfew in Germany.

The PM will now leave Delhi on September 25 instead of September 26 and will land in New York around five hours ahead of schedule, on the afternoon of September 26. His first engagement is a visit to the 9/11 memorial site early on the morning of September 27.

His plane - the Air India One - will halt in Germany's Frankfurt before beginning the trans-Atlantic leg of the journey. Hence the precaution.

Night flights - those between 11 pm and 5 am - have been banned in Frankfurt, Europe's third busiest airport, since 2011 following complaints by local residents about the noise.

PM Modi is to meet President Barack Obama at the White House on September 29 and 30. He would attend the UN General Assembly session in New York and then fly to Washington DC for the meeting with Mr Obama.

In a recent interview to the television channel CNN, the Prime Minister said that despite "ups and downs" he envisages a "deepening of ties" between India and the US.

This would be his maiden visit to the US. For years after the 2002 Gujarat riots soon after he came to power as the state's chief minister, Mr Modi was denied a US visa.

But ever since his spectacular victory in the national elections four months ago, the Obama administration has courted Mr Modi.

Already, US Secretary of State John Kerry and Defence Secretary Chuck Hagel have visited India.

China's Unusual Message to its Troops In Border Row: 'Follow President's Order'

China's Unusual Message to its Troops In Border Row: 'Follow President's Order'

About 1,000 Chinese soldiers have not budged from the site of an intense face-off with India in Chumur in Ladakh, even five days after their President Xi Jinping told Prime Minister Narendra Modi that he had ordered his troops to withdraw.

Now the Chinese Defence Ministry has, in an unprecedented statement, asked its soldiers to "follow President Xi's orders". The statement, posted on  the ministry's website said, "All PLA (People's Liberation Army) forces should follow the instructions of President Xi Jinping, also chairman of the Central Military Commission (CMC), and update their operations to meet new goals and missions set by the CMC."

The new order betrays a mystifying disconnect between the President's instructions and the response of his troops.

Indian strategists say it is even more surprising because Xi Jinping is one of China's most powerful presidents in almost 30 years; he took over as chairman of the Central Military Commission and as president at the same time.

That the Chinese soldiers have apparently not followed their president's orders indicates a long-haul crisis for India, which yesterday took steps to show its displeasure at the border standoff.

New Delhi on Sunday withdrew clearances for Chinese editors who were coming to Delhi for an annual media exchange with Indian journalists.

The border face-off clouded President Xi's three-day India visit, which ended on Friday. PM Modi raised with him twice the subject of incursions and bluntly called for an early solution and clarification of the Line of Actual Control.

Chumur, which is the southernmost part of Ladakh, stands at the intersection of the international border and the Line of Actual Control or the de facto border between the two countries. The Chinese troops allegedly brought in in heavy construction equipment and a large labour force to set up a road up to the border.

The standoff in Chumur worsened on Saturday after a second intrusion by Chinese army personnel in two days was reported at another point after they had withdrawn from the same area.

India's Mars Orbiter, Mangalyaan Clears Crucial Test

India's Mars Orbiter, Mangalyaan Clears Crucial Test

ndia's Mars orbiter satellite, which has been on an arduous nine-month-long journey to the Red Planet, cleared a crucial test today. The main rocket engine of the satellite, which has been lying dormant for this extended period, was successfully test-fired.

The Indian Space Research organisation or ISRO confirmed that the engine had a "perfect burn' and the trajectory has also been corrected. Now all systems are set for the big event on September 24, the day Mangalyaan is set to enter the Martian orbit. (Also Watch: Mangalyaan Healthy, Team Cool, says ISRO Chief to NDTV)

Launched on November 5 last year, Mangalyaan has been successfully braving the rough weather in space. The satellite carries one large rocket motor and eight smaller thrusters. (Watch the Video)

ISRO Chairman K Radhakrishnan had earlier told NDTV, "We have done a lot of ground simulations and hope that the four-second test will slow the satellite down and correct its trajectory as well in a two-in-one operation". (Mangalyaan Faces Four-Second Trial by Fire)

The big rocket motor on board Mangalyaan had performed flawlessly in over two dozen earlier missions since 1992, and scientists were confident that this time too, things would go as per the plan.

"All commands have been uploaded and the satellite will perform the tasks automatically," Mission controller B N Ramakrishna had said.

There were two parallel circuits to start up the larger rocket motor; ISRO had used these two paths sequentially as part of plan A and plan B. In case the trial had failed, the engineers even had a Plan C to fall back on; they would have used the tiny thrusters to slow down the satellite and still try to reach an orbit of Mars.

The Mangalyaan is laced with eight small rockets and one big rocket. The bigger one had been on an extended slumber, one comparable to that of the sleeping demon 'Kumbhakaran'. But now, it has been 'woken up' for a few seconds in a risky, but successful, operation by the ISRO.

During US Visit, 'Fasting' PM Narendra Modi Will Only Have Tea, Lemonade

During US Visit, 'Fasting' PM Narendra Modi Will Only Have Tea, Lemonade

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be on a Navratrifast during his visit to the United States beginning later this week and will only have water, tea and nimbu pani or lemonade while there.

During his six-day trip, US President Barack Obama will host dinner for Mr Modi and there are other engagements planned over meals including breakfast with leading American CEOs on September 29.

However, PMO sources said his fast won't impact any engagements he will have during his official visit to the US.

"He will only consume lemonade with some honey and a cup of tea every day," a senior official in Mr Modi's office told Reuters, adding, "He has been fasting for the last four decades and does not want to change this pattern even while he is travelling."

"He wakes up at 4 a.m., meditates, prays and carries his own bottle of lemonade with him," said another government official who has worked closely with Mr Modi for 12 years.

Mr Modi, 64, had hitherto chosen not to schedule official tours and would not leave Gujarat during this nine-day period in his 13 years as chief minister.

Navratri, or "nine nights" in Sanskrit will be observed from September 25 to October 3. Mr Modi leaves for the US on the evening of September 25, Thursday and is scheduled to return on October 1.

He has a hectic schedule both in New York and in Washington. Apart from an address at the United Nations General Assembly, the Prime Minister will participate in a rally of Indian Americans at New York's Madison Square Garden and will hold bilateral talks in Washington with Mr Obama, who will host dinner for him on September 29.

"Doctors had suggested that he should consume fruits and more juices but he has refused to make any dietary additions during theNavratri celebrations," said a senior minister in Gujarat, known to be close to Mr Modi.

Millions in the country fast during the Navratris, in worship of Goddess Durga. Many eat a spartan, single meal at the end of every day. Others, like Mr Modi, do not eat at all.

Asian Games: India bow out of men’s football

Asian Games: India bow out of men’s football

he Indian footballers gave a better account of themselves but that was not enough to a stop a superior Jordan side from winning 2-0 as Sunil Chhetri and Co crashed out of the competition at the group league stage of the 17th Asian Games in Incheon on Monday.
Jordan struck on either side of the break through striker Laith Albashtawi in the 17th minute and midfielder Yazan Mohammed Yousef in the 66th.
India thus conceded seven goals in two group league matches to finish their turbulent Asian Games journey, which was marred by controversies after the sports ministry initially refused to send the team on government cost.
However, Chhetri and his boys can take heart from the fact that they showed a lot of spirit against the Jordanian side that was both technically and tactically superior.
The defending was better with the two side-backs Narayan Das, who plays for Dempo, and Pritam Kotal of Mohun Bagan doing a good job in cutting down on opposition’s wing play.
India coach Wim Koevermans’ strategy to play with a single striker in Robin Singh meant that his boys never had the numerical advantage when they tried to hit their opponents during the sporadic counters.
Robin would cut a lonely figure upfront as skipper Chhetri was operating from wide right but, on many occasions, had to fall back in order to help the defence.
Robin had a couple of left-footed cracks at Jordan goal and at times would wait for someone to join him on attack.
India conceded the first goal when Ahmed Mousa’s powerful right-footer was parried away by goalie Amrinder Singh.
However, with stopper Laurenco Joyner Monte not in his position, striker Albashtawi barged in to slot it home.
Among the Indian midfielders, Lalrindka Ralte operating from the left-wing had a good game although same can’t be said about Seiminlen, who was playing behind Robin.
Dika, in fact, had a left-footed crack in the 82nd minute but it was above horizontal.
